Resolution 24-02M

WHEREAS, provincial legislation states financial participation in the Chinook Regional Library is mandatory; and

WHEREAS, Provincial Grant funding for Regional Libraries has decreased therefore increasing the amount funded by municipalities;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Provincial Government be lobbied to increase grant funding for libraries and not download increased costs to municipalities.

Response From Honourable Jim Melenchuk:

The Department of Learning is pleased that you share with us an interest in sustaining a vibrant public library system. We recognize that libraries are a shared responsibility with municipalities supporting local services and the province supporting resource-sharing between libraries.

In spite of the fiscal challenges facing the province, the Government of Saskatchewan has protected its investment by maintaining the amount of funding allocated for regional libraries. In a knowledge-based global economy, it is crucial for all Saskatchewan citizens to have equitable access to library services and information for their economic, educational and social wellbeing. Funding for public libraries will be considered in the 2003 – 04 budget process.
