Point of Privilege Resolution No. 9-01A

WHEREAS, CP Rail has transferred ownership of a significant number of kilometers of abandoned railway property to the Trans Canada Train Foundation to be used for the development of a national recreational trail; and

WHEREAS, Trans Canada Trail Foundation has provided a written letter to all affected rural municipalities requesting a tax exemption on these abandoned right of ways; and

WHEREAS, in many instances, the appropriate and common sense solution would be to transfer the abandoned rail line to adjacent property owners;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that all affected rural municipalities refrain from providing any tax exemptions or concessions on these lands; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that SARM initiate discussions with the Trans Canada Trail Foundation to provide for the transfer of their abandoned rail line property to adjacent landowners where these lines do not coincide with their national recreational trail development.
