WHEREAS the Ministry of Environment has specific regulations in place for the decommissioning of landfills; and
WHEREAS the cost of decommissioning landfills for a municipality under the population of 2,500 is a very significant challenge; and
WHEREAS the disposal of waste material is a necessity for communities under the population of 2,500; and
WHEREAS there are already several personal landfills in rural areas that are filled in and overgrown with grass;
BE IT RESOLVED that SARM lobby the Ministry of Environment to allow municipalities under the population of 2,500 who are willing to transfer waste to a regional landfill, the ability to fill-in their pits and leave them as is without any further decommissioning.
