Resolution No. 32A-01M
WHEREAS, Municipal Pesticide Container Sites are scheduled to be decommissioned in the year 2003; and
WHEREAS, many municipalities wish to retain these sites because of successful compliance of pesticide users, alternate sites not within a reasonable traveling distance, and danger of pesticide containers be erroneously discarded at landfill sites;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that SARM actively lobby the Provincial Government for the retention and continuation of the Municipal Pesticide Collection Program.
Response from Saskatchewan Environment and Research Management:
It was agreed at a major stakeholder group meeting on November 29, 1999 that the collection for pesticide containers will be changed from the municipal sites to a dealer collection network by the year 2002. Representatives from the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities, Pesticide Container Management Association and agri-chemical industry attended the meeting. Since then, the Pesticide Container Collection Program has gone through a transition period, with increasing dealer participation and communication to producers regarding the new approach. Saskatchewan Environment and Resource Management will work with SARM and industry to ensure that there is an adequate number of dealer collection sites available prior to the closure of existing RM sites.
