Mule Deer Hunting
Res #: 23-12A

Departments: Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment
WHEREAS the mule deer population is quite excessive in zones 44, 47 and 54; and
WHEREAS the increased mule deer population is creating damage and extra costs for farmers;
BE IT RESOLVED that a regular mule deer season be implemented for zones 44, 47 and 54.
Response from Honourable Dustin Duncan, Minister of Environment:
The Ministry of Environment reviews and adjusts quotas in each wildlife management zone (WMZ) annually using best available population information and input from many stakeholders, including SARM. The quotas for mule deer in these three zones was 675 animals and will be increased by a further 100 animals for 2012. As well, WMZ 54 will have a first time quota of 50 antlerless mule deer. Targeting the female component of the population is an effective method to reduce deer numbers and ministry staff will continue to monitor the situation and tailor management options accordingly.
