WHEREAS, RMs did not pay policing prior to 1999; and

WHEREAS, certain urban municipalities receive a percentage of the revenues from fines levied in their jurisdictions; and

WHEREAS, the current legislation does not allow for the expansion of this program to other municipalities;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that SARM lobby the minister of justice to amend the legislation to permit RMs to receive a percentage of the revenue from fines levied by the RCMP within their boundaries.

Response from Honorable Chris Axworthy, Q.C., Minister of Justice and Attorney General:

The Department of Justice is looking at the feasibility of this resolution and will be reporting back to SARM through the Task Force on Policing and the Administration of Justice, which is meeting again on December 11, 2001.
