Resolution No. 5-01A

WHEREAS, election dates for rural municipalities, urban municipalities and school divisions are different; and

WHEREAS, every third year when elections for rural municipalities, urban municipalities and school divisions occur, the varying dates cause considerable confusion for people;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that SARM request that the provincial government change municipal and school election dates so that the dates coincide, thereby reducing confusion among the electorate.

Response from Hon. Ron Osika:

Concurrent local government elections could involve a number of potential changes to current local government electoral processes including:
– adjustments to terms of office for council members
– review of voter qualifications
– review of appropriate dates.

MAH is in the process of identifying potential amendments for 2002 and will ensure this issue is included on the list for consideration and analysis. Rural municipal leaders will be invited to participate in any discussion that might be held.
