Disaster Relief for Municipalities

NEWS RELEASE

Disaster Relief For Municipalities

SARM is please with today’s announcement by the Provincial Government to assist rural municipalities that have suffered from excessive moisture by contributing $2.4 million to help cover the deductible on the Provincial Disaster Assistance Program (PDAP).  This will go a long way in reducing the financial hardship placed on many municipalities due to severe and multiple disasters.

PDAP provides financial assistance to communities and individuals who incur substantial losses due to a natural disaster.  “There had been concerns about the deductible, in fact a number of municipalities have had to raise their mill rates to help cover these costs,” said SARM President Dave Marit.  “SARM had been aggressively lobbying the government to remove this deductible”.

“SARM is please with the work Minister Ron Harper and the Department of Corrections and Public Safety has done in providing this needed assistance, we would also like to thank Minister Van Mulligen who has been a strong advocate for municipalities on this issue”, said Marit.  “With this funding municipalities can begin to put the crisis behind them and build for the future.”

Founded in 1905, SARM has been representing Saskatchewan municipalities for over 100 years.  SARM is the voice of rural Saskatchewan and is focused on supporting the growth of healthy, sustainable rural communities in the province.
