SARM Reacts to 2007 Cover Crop Protection Program (CCPP)
SARM is pleased with today’s announcement by the Federal Government to assist flooded producers with a payment of $15 per acre on land too wet to seed. SARM hopes that the province will also assist producers as they did with a $10 per acre payment in 2006.
SARM is concerned about the requirement for producers to be Crop Insurance Participants in order to qualify. Tying the payment to Crop Insurance is a problem for producers who chose not to participate in the program, especially those whose coverage has been depleted by numerous years of flooding in the North East. If disaster programs are going to dependent on participation in Crop Insurance, producers must have advance warning and Crop Insurance must be a viable risk management tool.
“We appreciate that the Federal Government has stepped up to the plate with dollars for those affected by excessive moisture. However there is a need to provide similiar financial assistance to those affected by other disasters such as drought.” said SARM President David Marit. “We will continue to press the Federal and Provincial Governments for long term, predictable safety nets that producers can count on when faced with similar problems in the future.
