SARM urges RMs to apply for disaster assistance
SARM is urging rural municipalities affected by flooding to take the necessary steps to apply for provincial disaster assistance.
“Some areas of the province are experiencing extremely high water levels and more RMs are requesting to be designated eligible for disaster assistance every day,” said SARM President David Marit. “We encourage affected RMs to evaluate the damage caused by flooding and apply for assistance from the Provincial Disaster Assistance Program (PDAP).”
While water levels vary across the province, RMs in the northeast are experiencing the most severe conditions. In many cases roads and bridges have been washed out, fields have been flooded, and homes and cottages have been damaged.
“SARM will continue to monitor the impact flooding is having on rural infrastructure,” Marit says. “RMs are already facing an infrastructure deficit, and the added costs of repairing damage is a big setback. We will work with the Province to ensure RMs get compensation for their losses as soon as possible.”
Provincial funding is available to local governments and individuals who have had uninsurable property damage caused by a natural disaster. PDAP provides financial assistance for restoring essential services and property to their pre-disaster conditions.
