WHEREAS Saskatchewan livestock producers are experiencing losses due to cougars; and
WHEREAS the cougar population appears to be increasing in Saskatchewan;
BE IT RESOLVED that the Ministry of Environment be petitioned to exclude cougars from any designation as vulnerable, threatened or endangered under The Wildlife Act, 1998.
Response from Honourable Nancy Heppner, Minister of Environment:
Cougars are not listed as vulnerable, threatened or an endangered species in
Saskatchewan. However, cougars are listed as a protected species in the province and the ministry believes it would be inappropriate to remove them from their current status. The low population level combined with their secretive nature means that few Saskatchewan residents have ever seen a cougar.
Legislation provides that if cougars represent a real threat to livestock or human
health, they may be killed. The incident must be reported to the nearest conservation officer and the cougar carcass must be made available to the ministry for scientific inspection and/or preservation for public display purposes.
