Resolution No. 19-03A

WHEREAS, Saskatchewan Highways requires bridge signs to be placed on a separate post directly in front of the bridge abutment, so that the bottom of the signs are 1.0 metres above the road surface, with the inside edge of the sign marking the inside of the bridge; and

WHEREAS, that portion of the sign that extends above the bridge presents a problem for wide equipment and as a result, signs are damaged, or removed and not replaced;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that SARM lobby Saskatchewan Highways to revisit the standards for bridge sign placement.

Response From the Honourable Mark Wartman, Minister of Highways and Transportation:

Safety is a priority for Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation and the hazard marker is used to warn motorists of an obstruction such as a bridge abutment. The hazard markers are currently installed on a separate post directly in front of the bridge abutment. They are installed so that the bottom of the sign is 1.0 m above the outside shoulder edge. A review of the present location of the hazard markers is needed, as there have been functional issues related to marker removal for wide loads, along with ongoing breakage. The department will review alternative locations for the hazard markers, to address operational requirements while at the same time maintaining or enhancing the level of safety provided by the hazard markers.
