Resolution 36-02A
WHEREAS, rural municipalities are now paying a percentage of the cost of policing services, and this amount will increase to $20 per capita, in 2002; and
WHEREAS, urban municipalities that have police services retain a portion of traffic fines levied in their jurisdictions;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that we request the Province of Saskatchewan to forward a portion of the traffic fines levied in the jurisdictions of rural municipalities to those rural municipalities.
Response From Honourable Chris Axworthy, Q.C., Minister of Justice:
The Department of Justice has reviewed its administrative process for collecting fines and is not able to expand the reimbursement of fine revenues at this time as it would require a budget support for significant system changes. However, the issue is recognized as a matter of interest to a large number of municipalities, and an issue that will be kept in mind when we are able to upgrade our system.
