Resolution 26-02A 

WHEREAS, Noxious Weeds are becoming a major problem across the province; and

WHEREAS, these weeds are being spread to different areas in the province by the sale of certified seed;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that SARM lobby the Provincial and Federal Governments to establish zero tolerance of primary and secondary noxious weeds within certified and registered seed.

Response From the Hon. Clay Serby:

The federal government is responsible for regulating the weed seed content in certified and registered seed according to the federal Seeds Act. For most large seeded crops, the allowable Primary Noxious weeds are and the allowable Secondary Noxious weeds are less than one per kilogram.

The Seeds Act is currently under review. The province is participating on the advisory committee recommending changes to the Act. Our recommendations include tightening of the allowances for the noxious weeds, and expanding the list of noxious weeds to be considered.
