Bill C-49’s Royal Assent Positive News for SARM
The royal assent of Bill C-49 is welcome news for the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM) and its members. With a strong mandate from its membership, SARM was active in the Canada Transportation Act review and Bill C-49 consultations. SARM worked with the Crop Logistics Working Group to provide feedback to Minister Garneau, Minister MacAulay, and transport committees in both the House of Commons and the Senate of Canada.
“SARM is pleased to see that Bill C-49 has finally received royal assent after a lengthy process. We hope to see new mechanisms implemented as soon as possible,” said SARM President Ray Orb. “We are hopeful it will relieve the current backlog of grain in Saskatchewan and benefit producers.”
Bill C-49 provides enhanced protections and tools for producers to ensure their goods get to market in a reasonable time. The new rules governing grain transportation by rail will allow for reciprocal penalties ensuring that service obligations to producers are met.
