Agreement in Principle on Port of Churchill Welcome News for SARM
The Government of Canada has announced that an agreement in principle has been reached to restore service and transfer ownership of the Port of Churchill, located in northern Manitoba. Grain shipments have not been accepted at the port since 2016, forcing producers to find other options.
SARM is pleased that real progress has been made and that the federal government has committed to re-establishing rail service before winter 2018.
“The Port of Churchill provides producers with another option for exporting their products and this will help to move the grain backlog once it becomes operational again,” said SARM President Ray Orb. “We have advocated for progress on this issue since it first stopped receiving grain shipments so we are pleased with this development.”
