WHEREAS the mule deer population is quite excessive in Zones 44, 47 and 54; and
WHEREAS the increased mule deer population is creating damage and extra costs for farmers;
BE IT RESOLVED that a regular mule deer season be implemented for Zones 44, 47 and 54.
Response from Honourable Ken Cheveldayoff, Minister of Environment:
Mule deer is a species that is highly sought after and licences are allocated through the Big Game Draw to ensure that populations are sustainable for the long term. In 2013, Wildlife Management Zones (WMZs) 44 and 54 will have quotas which remain the same as 2012 and WMZ 47 will see a slight decrease compared to 2012. There will be 350 either-sex and 550 antlerless licences allocated in the draw for these zones along with an either-sex mule deer archery season that runs from September 1 to October 31. The quota reduction in WMZ 47 is in response to the severe winter experienced throughout Saskatchewan. It should be noted that quotas in these areas have remained higher than in many other WMZs to address landowner concerns about growing mule deer populations.
