WHEREAS grain bags are a pollution hazard; and

WHEREAS grain bags attract rodents; and

WHERAS in some cases grain bags are being burned;

BE IT RESOLVED that SARM lobby the government to implement a grain bag policy which would include a refundable deposit being required when grain bags are purchased.

MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE RESPONSE

The Ministry of Agriculture  agrees it is important to have a permanent grain bag recycling program. Our Ministry is working closely with the Ministry of Environment on this issue. Environment is considering regulations that would require industry stewards to create, fund and operate a permanent  recycling program for grain bags. We will ensure that the Ministry of Environment is aware of your views on this issue as they move forward on this issue.
