The Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM) remains concerned about the on-going canola crisis in Canada and the impacts felt by our Saskatchewan producers. Nearly half of canola and canola products produced in Canada go to China and Saskatchewan is the largest exporter of canola in Canada and globally. Saskatchewan producers need access to the world market – our agriculture industry and the provincial and national economies depend on it.
“We need to see movement on this issue,” stressed SARM President Ray Orb. “We believe a diplomatic resolution is required to address this issue with China, and we’d like the federal government to demonstrate action on behalf of canola producers across the country.”
The Advanced Payment Program, which increases the maximum loan limit and increases interest free loans to canola producers and extending the AgriStability program by two months, which was announced earlier this month is not a long-term solution to this crisis.
“Nearly a month has passed, and producers are frustrated with the lack of progress in putting funds in place,” commented Orb. “It is imperative that we stand united in supporting our farmers and SARM remains committed to ensuring a resolve to this issue.”
