The Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM) welcomes today’s announcement by Provincial Agriculture Minister Bob Bjornerud of $71 million for livestock producers. This results in a $40/head payment for cow producers and a $20/head payment for hog producers.
“Livestock producers have been struggling economically since 2003 and needed some support to help them through this economic crisis in the short term,” said SARM President David Marit.
“SARM would like to thank the province for recognizing the livestock crisis and for demonstrating its commitment to the industry through today’s announcement,” said Marit. “We are hopeful that the Federal Government recognizes the need and will provide their 60%.”
SARM raised the need for government to implement effective short-term and long-term programs to help this industry and the announcement today will provide some immediate assistance. This funding will be allocated on a per head basis and will flow to producers by the end of March 2009. Application forms will be available at local Rural Municipal offices as early as today.
Marit said, “We appreciate the fact that there will be a simplified application process and that money will flow immediately. That is exactly what the livestock industry needs right now as it faces continued negative economic pressures.”
