SARM Applauds New Rail Safety Improvement Program
The Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM) is pleased with the federal government’s announcement of a new Rail Safety Improvement Program. Over $55 million will be available through the program to fund safety improvements on rail property, along rail lines, and at grade crossings. The funding announced is targeted at reducing incidents and accidents on rail lines.
“SARM applauds the Government of Canada’s investment in rail safety,” said President Ray Orb. “We have worked closely with rural municipalities to ensure compliance with the new Grade Crossing Regulations, which were introduced to improve rail safety. Funding to assist in improving rail safety at grade crossings or any aspect of rail lines or property is much needed and appreciated.”
Funding to improve provincially-regulated rail lines and grade crossings would also be welcomed by SARM. In its 2017 Provincial Budget Submission, SARM requested that the Government of Saskatchewan make funding available to improve provincially regulated public grade crossings. Financial assistance will help ensure that necessary upgrades to grade crossings are made in a timely manner, improving the safety of our roads.
