For Immediate Release
SARM welcomes the news of funding initiatives for farmers and rural communities to benefit from increased biofuels production – a promising economic opportunity for rural Saskatchewan.
Yesterday, the Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food and Minister for the Canadian Wheat Board, announced $11 million in funding initiatives designed to ensure farmers and rural communities have opportunities to participate in and benefit from increased Canadian biofuels production.
“This is great news for rural Saskatchewan,” said SARM President David Marit. “Agriculture producers must move up the value chain and this announcement is a step in that direction.”
The Biofuels Opportunities for Producers Initiative (BOPI) will assist agricultural producers to develop sound business proposals as well as to undertake feasibility studies.
“Rural Saskatchewan welcomes and is actively seeking economic development opportunities,” said President Marit. “Biofuels is a huge opportunity for rural Saskatchewan. We have the largest number of arable acres of farmland in the country and can be a major player in this emerging industry.”
Rural Saskatchewan will be watching with interest for further announcements this fall from the federal government on the biofuels strategy.
