Provincial-Federal Relations

Year: 2019

Number: POP 7-19M

Department: Matters Pertaining to SARM

Midterm: Yes

WHEREAS as the current federal government is ignoring the economic realities of Saskatchewan;

WHEREAS as the federal tax burden of the people of this province continues to increase;

BE IT RESOLVED that SARM support the Government of Saskatchewan in their efforts to negotiate a more equitable agreement with the federal government for the people of Saskatchewan.

RESPONSE:
The SARM Board of Directors agrees that the federal government must do more to help the people, industries, and communities of Saskatchewan thrive. Lower commodity prices and trade disputes have generated challenging economic conditions in rural Saskatchewan, and it is critical that we have a partner in Ottawa to resolve these issues. SARM works hard to have our voice heard in Ottawa. We travel to Ottawa on an annual basis, follow federal issues closely and participate in consultations wherever possible, and are a strong voice for rural western communities at the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM). President Orb has been elected for his fourth term as the Chair of FCM’s Rural Forum, where he works hard to ensure the rural voice and lens is always taken into account when the federal government is making decisions. The Rural Forum consists of elected officials throughout the nation. SARM will continue its work to ensure the needs of our members are heard by civil servants and elected officials in Ottawa
